The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS)
is a private, non-profit, voluntary organization founded in 1895
in Atlanta, Georgia. The mission of SACS is the improvement of Education
in the South through accreditation. There are five other private
regional accrediting associations that provide similar services
to the other regions of the United States.
The SACS Commission on Colleges is the recognized regional accrediting
body in the eleven U.S. Southern states and in Latin America for
those institutions of higher education that award associate, baccalaureate,
master's or doctoral degrees. The US Secretary of Education recognizes
accreditation by the Commission on Colleges in establishing eligibility
of higher education to participate in programs authorized under
Title IV of the 1992 Higher Education Amendments and other federal
programs.
Reaffirmation of accreditation by the Commission on Colleges results
from a thorough and careful evaluation of the educational quality
of the institution. This qualitative evaluation depends heavily
on the collective professional judgment of the faculty and administrative
staff of the institution during a self-study process. This focus
of the peer review is on both the delivery and the outcome of the
educational process.
The University of Florida is conducting a focused self-study approved
by the SACS-Commission on Colleges. The focus of the self-study
will be on Globalizing Education at the University of Florida. This
two and a half year process will provide UF with a direction for
the future as well as benchmarks for assessing our progress toward
a truly International University.
